Humor Consultants Respond

In times of disaster, heroes are born. As an organization that has brought joy and hope to many, the last couple of weeks has indeed been a challenge. Never before in our history have we experienced a situation like we have seen as on the East Coast. We pray for all those that have been touched either from the disaster and/or those that are reaching out to help. Everyone will be affected by Sandy.

As many of you have heard us say for years, “It is not what happens to you that dictates your life, it is how you react to what happens to you that dictates your life. Wherever you are in life, someone has had it worse and made it, and someone has had it better and blown it.”

In an effort to help, we are offering a 20% contribution to The Red Cross to anyone that hires Humor Consultants, Inc. in the next thirty days to help their team. We will take that off our fee and have your organization send it directly to The Red Cross.

This disaster will test our moral fiber. During difficult times, Phil Sorentino has offered a program we call, Humor, Hope, Healing and Heroes.
Humor, Hope, Healing, and Heroes is a theme-based program that makes your employees/partners the stars. If someone has a message or best practice, instead of them getting up to make a speech, which most people don’t want to do, Phil will “interview” them. They can rehearse ahead of time, by phone, e-mail, etc. so it becomes more like a conversation.

People have evolved just as television has evolved. Believe it or not, television has moved from soap operas, to talk shows, to reality television. Your staff needs be the stars.

Jack Welch, retired President of General Electric, says, “Now is the time to rally the troops”. He also says our greatest asset is “our desire to learn from each other.” What increases our desire to learn from each other is trust. The more we trust each other the more we are willing to learn from each other. A major problem in organizations is trust. How do you get people to trust you? They have to know you. How do they get to know you? Do you have them stand up and talk about themselves? Most people would not feel comfortable with that, but if they had an opportunity to rehearse an interview, take notes, and then come on the show, they can then be made a star. Also, we can call for usual and/or unusual talents; i.e., stupid pet tricks, cooking demonstrations, karaoke, or even short comedy skits where your members can expose their own unique talents and gifts.

Book Recommendations

Book Review – When Bad Things Happen To Good People, by Harold S. Kushner
This is a great book for anyone who has been hurt by life. He wrote the book out his own need to put into words some of the most important things he had come to believe and know. And to help other people who might one day find themselves in a similar predicament. To help people who want to go on believing, but whose anger at God made it hard for them to hold on to their faith and be comforted by religion. And for all those people whose love of God and devotion to him led them to blame themselves for their suffering and persuade themselves that they deserve it.
Norman Vincent Peale said that this is a book that all humanity needs as it will help to understand the painful vicissitudes of this life and be able to stand up to them creatively.

The Science of Why We Keep Smiling

Resilience researchers are finding these success strategies work for many people. Here’s why.
1. You Don’t Need to be Healthy to be Happy
University of Michigan research found that people were remarkably resilient even when faced with serious illness. Tracking a group of 49 dialysis patients, scientist found that they were mostly in good moods and just as happy as a healthy control group of 49. The researchers believe that these good spirits are due to the patients’ power of adaptation.
2. Humor Leads to Hope
People who watched 15 minutes of a funny video were significantly more hopeful than those who didn’t view it, learned researchers at Texas A&M University. The positive thoughts from comedy, they speculate, chase the negative ones away: “That, in turn, may lead to an increase in a person’s perceived ability to overcome obstacles.”
We believe happiness is your choice. Happiness and self-acceptance go hand in hand. As your self-acceptance increases, the more happiness you will allow yourself to notice, accept, and enjoy.

This is an event we offer that is designed to show appreciation and increase retention of the people that help you be successful. We suggest you invite your clients, staff, suppliers, spouses, and/or significant others to a celebration that will educate and entertain.

Phil had a lot of fun recently presenting one our newest programs based on the Seven Da Vincian Principles. Those principles are:
Curiosità – An insatiably curious approach to life and an unrelenting quest for continuous learning.
Dimostrazione – A commitment to test knowledge through experience, persistence, and a willingness to learn from mistakes.
Sensazione – The continual refinement of the senses, especially sight, as the means to enliven experience.
Sfumato (literally “Going up in Smoke”) – A willingness to embrace ambiguity, paradox, and uncertainty.
Arte/Scienza – The development of the balance between science and art, logic and imagination. “Whole-brain” thinking.
Corporalita – The cultivation of grace, ambidexterity, fitness, and poise.
Connessione – A recognition of and appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things and phenomena. Systems thinking.
These are from the book, “How to Think like Leonardo da Vinci,” by Michael J. Gelb. They will allow individuals to be more innovative and creative.
